Thank you so much; Miss Goudge brings it out of me. :) I am so glad I captured your feelings as well...I was feeling overwhelmed at trying to explain just why I loved her writing. And just like you, with two books, she's arisen to become one of my favorite authors, too!

Wasn't "The Scent of Water" lovely? My heart was captured as soon as she started describing the "little things" (miniature fairy objects) and I almost gasped...I'd never read someone who understood so well how beautiful objects nourish us. And the ruins where the bodger worked (Joshua, I think his name was)! That gripped me, too. Her characters and her settings and her spiritual insights...it was a wonderful reading experience.

And thank you about the picture! My friend took it, but I was right beside her marveling at the rosy glow of sunset on the cathedral. It reminds me of a scene where the sunset cast a rosy light on the cathedral in "The Dean's Watch."

Thank you for your comment! I was thrilled to receive it. Elizabeth Goudge is like a hidden treasure, and it's so nice to know others are unearthing her, too! I haven't read "Dean's Watch", but I just finished reading "The Scent of Water" (my second Goudge book after "The Little White Horse") for the first time a few months ago, and all those elements were EXACTLY the things that made me fall in love with that novel and with Goudge.

"The story was really well crafted. Even though some of the things that occur could be considered ordinary, they are anything but in the light of her pen. She makes life epic. At the end I almost felt the same sense of triumph against all odds that I got from the ending of Return of the King. It makes you look at your life in the same light—what will you allow God to accomplish in it? In short, Elizabeth Goudge is the first author I’ve found who I’d wholly like to write like. I feel a kinship with her—she writes such soul-satisfying books! Gah, yes! I felt exactly the same way, with the beautiful way she describes ordinary things of life, has a reverence for God and faith, human characters, and the quiet moments and things in our lives - her writing is exquisite and lovely, and one I'd love to write like myself too! I love how with just two books, she's risen to be among my favourite authors. I so can't wait to read more of her books! Your review has definitely bumped "Dean's Watch" up my tbr list as well :D
Thank you for sharing!

P.S. what a pretty picture of Hereford Cathedral - did you take that picture while you were in England?

Many blessings,
Joy
Joyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14392427700183064027noreply@blogger.com
