The book is clearly not fully finished-...Certainly! The book is clearly not fully finished--some of the narrative is draggy and the plot with Mrs. Clay and Mr. Elliot is poorly explained. But then, some classics have been worse written than Persuasion. JA was a perfectionist. :D <br /><br />YES! Naval commanders tended to be weatherbeaten and cranky. :P Most women complain about Ciaran Hinds, but I like the realism. Hmm ... maybe a revision could have polished up her narrative style? <br /><br />Ciaran Hinds was a very realistic Captain Wentworth. The actor in the new one (2007) doesn't look like a sailor in the least! But I liked Sally Hawkins as Anne. I'll have to check out the 1970s one! I don't hate it, exactly, but the narrative style isn't quite polished to her usual standards and there's less witty dialogue.<br /><br />I enjoyed it more in movies. My family's favorite movie is the one with Amanda Root, which had a very realistic Captain Wentworth. I also tried the old one from the 1970s and found it surprisingly good, though it had almost no music at all.
